Easiest Home Design Software To Use – Whether renovating a room or planning a new furniture design, I have been using this free software for years. It is very easy to use with drag and drop features. Plus, no need to understand complex software like CAD or Photoshop! Really anyone can do it if you have a little patience to find trivia. In addition to designing a new layout, renderings are great and helpful in visualizing your new space.
Whenever I share design plans I’m getting questions about the software I use, so I’m finally here to answer and guide them. This post is not sponsored, nor is it a complete tutorial with instructions on how to use it. I hope this helps give you an idea of where to start designing your home/yard/etc.
Easiest Home Design Software To Use
I will admit that it is not good for one thing and that is the extremely custom furniture/wallpapers/etc design. This software is limited, but I’ll get there soon. To fully customize spaces, you can try Sketchup, which is more accessible than CAD or Photoshop, but it requires practice and watching tutorials before you can really see what you want it to be. My friend Alison is a queen and SketchUp renderings can make them look like real photos. Check out its design!

I have used HomeStyler for years when I was planning my kitchen renovation. I spent almost half a decade trying to figure out where to put the walls, how the flow should work, how we could squeeze in an extra bathroom, and just general floor plans. HomeStyler has been helpful in helping me weigh the pros and cons of playing with different designs. Remember when I was first planning my kitchen layout??
Keep in mind, I am not a professional interior designer with access to all the tools and knowledge. I’m just a super invested neurotic homeowner here! If you are too, I bet you will enjoy playing this software.
I designed my entire house on HomeStyler! (psst: if you want to see my whole house design, you can also watch the full house tour video here)
The top view is very helpful for organizing spaces, assessing flow and measuring. In this floor plan view, you start by drawing rooms, setting dimensions, and then inserting objects. Before you add furniture, you will add doors, windows, openings, columns, etc. At this stage, you want to be very precise with your measurements because everything that follows is based on these specifications. I recommend getting a good tape measure for small things and then getting a laser rangefinder for walls and open spaces. Start with just one room and add to each adjacent space. I couldn’t stay in one room, so I put in every square foot of our property. I also have our A/C unit in the picture, but you know, I’m kind of A.
Interior Design Software Programs To Download In 2023
Once the walls and windows are in place, you can add furniture and wall colors to make the space quite realistic. As you can see above this is our master bedroom. It doesn’t look like a finished space, but it’s enough to give an idea of the space.
Again, HomeStyler is not meant to match the final design. And that’s exactly what makes it so easy to use and so quick to see results compared to more complex software programs. I do not use software to create exact renderings of specific colors and furniture. I use it to measure and see furniture scale, sight lines, and room-to-room flow. This photo above helps me figure out what the view from the window will look like if I add that outdoor sofa, or how the bed frame will cross the window, or how much space I have to make around the bed with the ruler tool. .
To add furniture, you select items from an extensive built-in library. You can sort by type and style or manufacturer to get what you want. Again, it’s limited, so you often have to choose what’s close but not exact. None of the products can be changed to a different color, but you can change the sizes of some of them. If you want something to match your home’s production, you can add a similar-looking piece of furniture, then match the dimensions to the existing piece. So take a side table, then make it wider and deeper to make it a bedside table, or make it taller and longer to make it a standing table. It may not look perfect, but measurements are important here.
As for measurements, a ruler is very helpful. I play around with where I want to place the cabinets, so I can drag the ruler tool to make sure my dimensions meet code or are within general design convenience. If not, I keep dragging and dropping appliances and cabinets to new locations.
Best Kitchen Design Software Of 2023 [free & Paid]
When planning a kitchen remodel I came up with 40 different designs (no joke). I appreciated being able to do it digitally with drag and drop software because I could see very quickly if things worked or failed.
For fun, I uploaded a picture of my dining room to make it more realistic. See how the chairs and dining table are part of the rendering but the built-in buffet, art and light fixtures are a picture of my house? I understand that this goes out, and is absolutely not necessary. But, it helps to visualize the space, doesn’t it?
The cool thing is that you can move that little blue icon around the house and pretend you’re walking. It’s hard to show in a photo, so you can watch this video I made a few years ago when I was coming up with a new design (just watch the first part, the second part is debatable as I’ve since changed the design).
Renderings! My goodness they look good! Once you design the room and choose the way it looks, you can make the graphics more realistic. Throughout the post, I’ve shared pictures of the graphics you see live while you’re creating the layout. But you can get extra fancy by using the Render tool to export high-resolution images with your favorite color temperatures and viewports. If the picture above doesn’t inspire you to see my kitchen finished one day, I don’t know what will.

To take the design further, I export the rendering to Photoshop where I paint the cabinets, add specific decorations and import photos of specific furniture. I won’t show you that beautiful kitchen design, I don’t want to spoil the surprise!
I’ve also taken the HomeStyler design to the outdoor backyard. I’ve set up our dining room table, chairs, and started thinking about where to put our fruit trees, raised vegetable beds, and rainwater cistern. This design isn’t final, so don’t hold me to it. I am constantly tweaking and adapting things whenever I get a new idea. Then again, that’s the beauty of easy-to-use software, huh?!
I can’t give you a full tutorial on the software, but I encourage you to set up an account (so you can save your designs), start designing a room, and play around with it. If you get stuck and want video tutorials, here are some helpful ones. Just a reminder, I’m not a Home Style spokesperson or anything, I just wanted to share this very helpful software with you.
If you design your house, could you please share the pictures with me? Tag me on Instagram, send me an email, or send me a shareable HomeStyler link. Happy designing!

Home Design Software
I have a lot of love for my historic home, but I’ve been shamefully neglecting the exterior paint. The tired finish was flaking and the faded colors didn’t do justice to my 1915 architectural beauty.
