You can ask Amazon Alexa for help without an Echo device nearby in Windows 11 or 10. Amazon’s Alexa app for Windows has a secret. With this app, you can call Alexa by clicking a button on the screen or by saying “Alexa” through hands-free mode. After Alexa appears, you can ask questions, request information, check your calendar and other personalized services, and access various skills and functions. You can also change various options to control the Alexa app.

Perhaps you have an Echo device through which you access your calendar, to-do list, and other information. You may find Alexa more useful than Cortana. Or maybe you want to try a voice assistant other than Cortana. To use the Alexa app on Windows, you don’t need an Echo, but you do need an Amazon account. Once installed, the Alexa app works equally well on both Windows 11 and Windows 10.

To get started, download and install the Alexa app for Windows from the Microsoft Store. When you start the app for the first time, you are asked to configure it. Click the Get Started button to set up Alexa. Sign in with your Amazon account, then click Accept to continue accepting the terms and conditions.

The next screen asks if you want to use Alexa hands-free or with the click of a button. The hands-free option is easier because you can activate Alexa by voice, just like you do with an Echo device, but this can use more battery power because the app is always listening. To turn this on, turn on the Wake Word switch – you can always turn it off in the future. The app also asks for permission to allow Alexa to access your microphone. Click Allow to allow this (Figure A).

The final setup screen presents two options, both of which are selected by default: Start the app when I log on to this computer and Pin the app to the taskbar. You can uncheck any of the options or change them later. Click the button to finish the setup (Figure B).

A few messages appear to confirm the two options. The first message asks for confirmation that you want to run the Alexa app when you log into Windows. Click Enable to confirm. Another message asks if you want to pin the app to the taskbar. Click Yes. The Alexa app opens. Click the Start button to drill down (Figure C).

Alexa invites you to try saying different requests. Say each request that appears on the screen to see how the app works and make sure it can respond to your voice (Figure D).

The Alexa app then displays various categories and settings. You can check out various features to learn more about the app and review your history with Alexa. The app offers several suggestions for what you can ask Alexa, but you may want to learn more about the types of questions and requests the app can handle (Figure E).

In the Alexa app, you can request many (but not all) of the same things you can ask Alexa through an Echo device: ask for location-based information, such as the weather or local restaurants; request your personal information, such as appointments and to-do lists; Research common topics; and request music and other content.

To see some examples of things you can ask for, tap an entry in the Things to Try app. It will take you to an Amazon web page with phrases, questions, and other functions the app can do. From this page, you can also view and configure other Alexa skills and features, such as music, lists, reminders, contacts, and smart home (Figure F).

Finally, click on the Settings entry. On the Settings screen, you can turn hands-free mode on and off using the Wake Word switch. You can enable or disable when Alexa starts and stops listening. You can view and change the keyboard shortcut used to activate Alexa, and you can enable or disable the app by launching it when you sign in to Windows (Figure G).
