As the city of Austin, Texas has grown as a creative and tech hub over the past few years, it has something much less positive: the city’s homeless population. This week, a team including architecture, design and technology came up with a radical new proposal to halt that growth using 3D printing.
3D printing company ICON, in partnership with Mobile Loaves & Fishes, a non-profit organization serving the Austin community, unveiled the first building in a proposed community of 3D printed structures for Austin’s homeless. The 500-square-foot reception center was printed in 27 hours, then decorated by designer Claire Znecker using furniture donated by Industry Waste.

Ann England, co-founder and head of corporate social responsibility at Industry West, says, “At Industry West, we believe that spaces that help people learn or improve are just as important as hotels and restaurants that we serve every day.” are important. “An old customer contacted the brand to offer a reception center.
“Using bright colors, interesting shapes and warm natural materials, we created a space that feels comfortable from the moment visitors walk in,” says designer Claire Zinecker.
This is where people are signing contracts for their homes, possibly for the first time. Thus, he explains, “the design goal was to create an office space that feels like home.”
The designer used plenty of natural materials, greens and shades of green for a space he describes as “pleasant and relaxing”.

The reception center – designed by architect Andrew Logan – is just the beginning of the project. ICON plans to 3D print six houses in the near future.
“The welcome center is at the heart of Phase II of the neighborhood,” explains Jason Ballard, CEO and co-founder of ICON, a proposed village called Community First. “The Village provides affordable, permanent housing and a supportive community for men and women coming out of chronic homelessness in general.”
They say they need to love and serve Austin’s neighbors who are living on the streets, while empowering the surrounding community to live a lifestyle of service to the homeless.
With its innovative technology, ICON is uniquely poised to solve one of the most enduring problems facing urban communities. “Our mission at ICON is to make quality, affordable homes accessible to everyone, everywhere,” says Ballard. “With more than 1.6 billion people living without adequate shelter and housing prices continuing to rise, we believe the time has come for a paradigm shift in housing.”
Ranch House Plan With 3 Bedrooms And 2.5 Baths
In addition to its work in Austin, ICON has also been involved in building 3D structures through the non-profit New Story in Latin America.
“Traditional construction is slow, fragmented, wasteful and has poor thermal properties that increase energy consumption, increase operating costs and reduce comfort,” says Ballard. “In addition, traditional materials such as drywall and particle board are among the least flexible materials ever invented. As a material, “concrete is well understood, affordable and flexible.”
England says the project “signals a new way of thinking about home building and design. ICON thinks outside the box and so does Claire. We’re excited to be a part of this forward-thinking project.” Excited for it.”
