Well, I’m here to advise you to completely give up and play video games! I’m just kidding: on some level I see beating the game as something productive. At least as productive as watching a movie, and less productive than reading a good book. So, if you’re looking to be productive, then you’ve come to the right place because today we’re continuing our quarantine series by giving suggestions on what games you should play while stuck inside. Again, I’ve set some arbitrary rules to keep this list from getting too boring. I can’t list multiple games from the same genre, all games must be from different developers, and I try to pick games that most people haven’t played. If I just add COD: Warzone to the list, it won’t do any good, everyone has heard of that game, and if you’re interested in it, you’ve probably already played it. The most important thing for me is the cost. I know this is a tough time for a lot of people, so I’ve made sure that every game is $20 or less at the time of this writing. I want this list to be useful, even if it’s something as trivial as showcasing a new game you’ve probably never heard of.

It’s tough, I mean there are a lot of strategy games out there that I know don’t get much love from a wider audience, but in my opinion none of them deserve to grow their player base more than Northgard. I decided to include the broad “strategy” category in this list instead of real-time strategy and turn-based games. Ultimately, I want variety, so if you don’t like one game on the list, you might like another. Plus I don’t want this list to be too long. Northgard is owned by Shiro Games, developers of Evoland 1 and 2. I haven’t played the game, but I hear it’s good. But what I can say for sure is that Northgard is all about quality. It’s a real-time strategy game, but I think anyone can play it easily. It doesn’t require incredible macro and micro skills, the game is much slower than most games in its genre, and you don’t need to control a huge army. The most you will control is a dozen soldiers. Northgard emphasizes strategy variety, with different factions you can choose from offering vastly different play styles. I don’t have the DLC for this game, but the factions it offers get even crazier. So, to explain a bit: each clan can hire a powerful warrior called a warchief. But in Serpent Clan, you start with your leader, and as the game progresses, your leader gets older and stronger. No other clan does this. When he reaches adulthood, you can go crazy with the game. This is a really great strategy. The Bull Clan only has a few very large people, like large size, they do more work and more damage, but need more food and more space. Most buildings can have two workers at a time, the Bull Clan only gets one per building. And each faction offers a crazy variety. That’s not to say that games like Age of Empires 2 don’t offer variation, it’s just that variation is easier to experience on a smaller scale in a game like Northgard. Once you have a maximum of about fifty units, who those units are is more important. You don’t just create an army, you create a squad. I understand that other real-time strategy games need this as well, but for someone who isn’t very well versed in the genre, Northgard makes me feel like I’m making important and good decisions on a small scale.

My favorite part of the game is that even when you are competing against other players, be it AI or human, there are other threats on the map. So, while managing the expansion of your territory, you have to deal with NPC enemies, undead, harpies and such guys. So it’s never boring. Honestly, my best advertisement for this game is that it’s an RTS for people who aren’t very good at the genre but still love it. I already have a strong player base, probably due to the sales going on at the time of writing, but I want more people to experience the Viking lifestyle with me.

I don’t know if I’ll regret choosing this game as a shooter, but I like it and don’t regret the time I spent on it. There are several musketeers similar to this game, but this one is my favorite. Mainly because everything works fine. The most popular game I’ve played in this sub-genre is Mount & Blade: Napoleonic Wars, which is a lot of fun but has a bit of a twist. This nonsense is, of course, endemic to Mount & Blade. And it’s good trash. But Holdfast is no frills, it’s a solid game and that’s what I want from the musket shooter genre. I know I’m in a very small group of people who actually enjoy this type of game, but I’m going to be on my knees asking people to give it a try. There’s something interesting about a gun that takes 10 seconds to reload and is wildly inaccurate. You can’t be a lone wolf in this game if you don’t work with your team you will die and die and die. And teams need leaders, that’s what drives me towards this game. A well-organized team will have a captain, or even several captains if the team is large enough. This captain will tell you what to do and everyone does it. Your team will march in order, fire when the captain tells you to fire, and only reload when the captain tells you to. It’s weird and it’s beautiful. I don’t think I’ve ever met a community more willing to follow its own rules outside of roleplaying. So if that’s your jam, then Holdfast is for you. And if that doesn’t sell you, there are naval battles. There is no way to win a sea battle where a dozen men aboard ship gather to sink another ship. Disclaimer: Sometimes the servers are just chaotic, 150 people fighting each other for the flag with no direction, and it’s still fun in its own way. In fact, the game recently came out of Early Access. I haven’t followed it too closely, but when I bought it a few years ago it was reliable, and I’m sure it still is.

I don’t even know what genre to call this game. Simulators? You simulate an aquarium with fish, but sometimes aliens attack it. “Simulator” is probably a better description since most of your time is spent simulating an aquarium. So this game came out over ten years ago, but I loved this game as a kid. I love this game more than life itself, and it’s still good. If you don’t like fish simulations, then this is not your game. But if you do, then oh my god, you’re going to love it. Now there’s a story mode, but the real highlight is the private aquarium mode. This is a functional aquarium that you control in real time: you buy your fish, feed them, name them, the whole 9 yards. And you can even set it as your screen saver. I still don’t know how to do this, and I don’t know if it really works, but it says it can! Tip: If you name your fish Santa, it will turn into Christmas colors and will sing to you every time it is fed.

I don’t know anything about this game other than I loved it as a kid and it has cool fish. In story mode, you can shoot aliens that are trying to kill your fish. Oh, I almost forgot! There is a little friend who gives you a bonus. You can get anything from clams that give you money, crabs that help you fight aliens, to pregnant fish that keep giving birth to guppies. This last one is a little weird, I won’t lie, but it’s very useful in story mode. Look, I’ll be your level, I could talk about this game all day, but I won’t. Just go buy this game and I won’t say anything, it’s $5 on Steam.

Of all the games I’m recommending today, I think this is the one you’re likely to enjoy the most.
