Limited space doesn’t have to be a barrier to creating a comfortable outdoor seating area – but zoning is key. Create space for an outdoor sofa (and accessories with cushions) or a small bistro set made from a garden rug. Fold up furniture is also helpful in a small garden as it reduces clutter and can be stored away when not in use.

Always think about privacy. It is unusual to find a small garden that is not neglected in some way but with a carefully placed shrubbery or a trellis line at the top of the fence, it is possible to minimize the problem. Think about where you place your seat; There may be a corner of the garden that is completely private.

What do you want to use your garden for? If a place to relax isn’t a priority for you, do you find a hobby room more useful? Consider setting up an outdoor room or pod. You can use a small garden as a gym, home office, craft room, art studio, games room, etc. The possibilities are endless.

Diagonal paving can be effective in small gardens – placing slabs at points creates a diamond shape, giving the optical illusion of a larger garden. Even small spaces can be made attractive with a crisp, contemporary look and strong landscape lines. Creating interesting interlocking zones with unique materials such as wood-stained decking or decorative stones can help even small gardens achieve a stylish look.

Outdoor kitchens are considered as luxurious as required garden features, but are essential for modern gardens even in small outdoor spaces. If you like to entertain guests or are a foodie and would benefit from a barbecue, pizza oven and sink and an alfresco dining preparation area, this is definitely worth considering.

Paint the walls and fences a light color. In small spaces, especially towns and cities, light is at a premium and while brick and wood absorb light and darken areas, white reflects light and brightens the space.

The easiest solution when it comes to plants is to go low on numbers but high on impact. So try big-leaved varieties such as Fatsia, Dicksonia or Mahonia that grow in partial shade. And keep these plants under control so that the space is not overcrowded. For container gardens, tiered planters or ladders can maximize the floor space available for flowers and herbs.

From here the magic starts to happen. Not to sit outside on the odd occasion when it’s warm enough, but to light it up every winter night or afternoon when you want to see something beautiful. Many professional lights require an electrician to install, but try warm white outdoor string lights for a less expensive option.

The trick is to layer the light. The first layer is for practicality: light stairs, seating areas, pathways. Next, light up any features you have: water features, small trees, interesting wall surfaces. Finally, add a really subtle layer of light at foot level to illuminate the entire space. If you have all three in different circuits you can mix and match for different effects.

Finally, consider the finishing touches with glass. Garden mirrors are especially useful, as they reflect light. But, consider the placement and don’t buy too big because birds may mistake them for an open space and fly into them.

Make sure you really want to make a change and see if you can keep and reuse what you already have. Draw or sketch what you have in mind and get it right the first time. Measure the garden, because getting it right will save you money without doing it twice. Spend as much as you can on good things, as they last longer and save money in the long run.

Have a garden party. Offer your friends a BBQ and a drink if they help you clean up the garden, build a fence, put on a roof, dig beds and plant plants. Paint an existing fence instead of buying a new one. For paths or terraces use self-binding gravel instead of stone or bricks, for example, Breeden Aggregates Amber Gravel or Wayfarer. Material costs are lower and labor costs are cheaper than laying natural stone.

If you are not too fancy shop for natural stone as supply costs vary greatly. Maybe use ceramic tiles instead of natural stone but make sure it is slip resistant. Visit recycling centers for unusual containers instead of buying containers. You can also pick up tools there. Reclamation yards are great hunting grounds for all things outdoors.

Grow your own plants from seeds or cuttings, swap plants with friends and neighbors, make your own compost and plant food. Herbaceous perennials or shrubs return year after year rather than annuals. Be smart with your purchases – bulbs are very cheap in the fall. Bare root plants are more affordable in fall or winter than container growing in spring or summer. Bare-root trees or hedging plants during the dormant season are less expensive than those grown in containers. And do not give up young plants as much as you want at the beginning, because they will grow, you have to be patient.
